IRA Charitable Distribution allows alums to set up scholarship endowment

When Haul '69 and Mary '69 Reddick entered Guilford College in the fall of 1965, it was still a very traditional school. Men wore coats and ties to dinner, Haul recalled, and women wore dresses.

So during a tour of the campus, the couple was interested in learning about some of the changes the College is undergoing, such as the revamping of the Guilford experience, known as the Guilford Edge. Mary was surprised to see that The Hut was still intact because she recalled plans the College had to tear it down at some point when she was a student.

Another thing the couple says appears to have stayed the same is that students continue to get what Haul called "truly a wonderful intellectual experience." It's the same experience he received at Guilford and continues to carry with him to this day.

"I've continued to draw on it the last 50 years," Haul said. "(It) seems like it every day."

Their time at Guilford touched them so that Haul and Mary want to see as many students as possible have a similar experience. They recently established the Haul and Mary Reddick Scholarship Endowment Fund, which will support full-time juniors and seniors who show financial need and have completed their first two years of college with at least a 3.0 GPA. The Reddicks, both retired educators who live in Kingman, Ariz., have made a contribution to the college in the form of a qualified IRA charitable distribution.

"That just seems like the best and highest use of our money, to enable someone to get an education," Mary said of why she and Haul set up the endowment.

Ara Serjoie, Vice President for Advancement, said Haul and Mary have never forgotten their beloved alma mater and their time as students in Greensboro despite having made their home in Arizona.

"In fact, with deep family ties to Guilford, they fondly recall their time at the College as one of transformation and unparalleled impact for which they remain grateful," Ara said. "Their generosity toward Guilford College through the establishment of the Haul and Mary Reddick Scholarship Endowment Fund is a beautiful and thoughtful manner by which they want to ensure Guilford students will be able to successfully earn their degrees. Generations of Guilfordians will follow in Haul and Mary's footsteps to make the world a better place."
